The rain was already coming down hard when I stepped through the glass doors of Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads.

A printer clicked, spat out half a page, and stopped.

Somewhere down the hall, a door shut with a clean sound that carried across the marble like a warning.

I checked my watch.

Thirteen minutes before the briefing.

I placed my clearance badge on the counter with two fingers and waited.

Petty Officer Reyes, the young sailor at the desk, glanced at it first.

His eyes moved from the badge to my face, then back to the badge again.

Recognition did not arrive all at once.

It moved across him slowly, like a shadow crossing a page.

Before he could say anything, Captain Benjamin Harlan stepped out from the office behind the security station.

He had the practiced confidence of a man used to being obeyed before he finished speaking.

Uniform perfect.

Hair trimmed.

Jaw set.

Eyes already deciding I was not worth his full attention.

He picked up my badge, looked at it for half a second, and gave me a smile that belonged on a man correcting a waitress.

Then he slid my badge back across the marble counter with two fingers.

Not handed it.

Slid it.

Like it was a parking receipt.

I looked down at it.

Then I looked at the folder tucked beneath his elbow.

The tab was red.

My name was printed on it in black block letters.

ADMIRAL ELEANOR WHITAKER.

Someone in that command had prepared for me.

Captain Harlan simply had not bothered to learn who I was.
