Then she heard breathing.

Small breathing.

A child trying not to make sound.

“911, what’s your emergency?” Denise asked, keeping her voice calm because calm was part of the job.

There was no answer at first.

Only rain, a faint hum of electricity, and something that might have been a door closing somewhere far from the phone.

“Hello? Can you hear me?”

A boy whispered, “My parents are doing something in the room.”

Denise straightened in her chair.

It was 11:42 p.m. on a stormy Thursday night in Akron, Ohio, and the call center had already been busy with weather problems.

Tree limbs down.

A stalled car.

A basement taking water.

This call sounded different.

“What room, sweetheart?” Denise asked.

“The back bedroom,” the boy whispered. “The one I’m not supposed to go into.”

His voice was so thin she had to lean toward the headset.

“What’s your name?”

“Caleb.”

“How old are you, Caleb?”

“Nine.”
