The first thing I did was not step into the car.

I tightened my hand around Noah’s fingers and looked at Nathan Brooks like a woman trying to memorize the shape of danger before deciding whether to walk toward it.

Lily had already taken one small step toward the open rear door, drawn by the cold air spilling out of the sedan and the unopened bottle of water in the cup holder.

That hurt more than the heat.

My little girl was six years old, hungry enough to stare at plastic like it was dinner, and still she waited for permission because fear had taught her manners no child should need.

Nathan stood on the other side of the door with one hand on the frame.

He did not smile.

He did not promise heaven.

He simply waited.

“Emily, I won’t ask twice,” he had said, and the words should have sounded cruel.

Somehow they did not.

They sounded like a man who knew that if he repeated the offer, it would become pressure, and he was trying not to be that kind of man.

I looked down the highway.

Nothing was coming.

No bus.

No friend.

No miracle with my name on it.

Just heat, asphalt, a broken zipper tied shut with a shoelace, and two children who were too tired to pretend they were not scared.

“If we get in,” I said, “my children sit beside me.”

Nathan nodded once.

“If we get in, you do not separate us.”

“I won’t.”

“If we get in, this is not charity. You said work. You said an arrangement. I want that in plain words.”
