The buzzing hit Mariana’s ear before the pain did.

It was close, sharp, metallic, and wrong.

She opened her eyes and screamed.

The bedroom lamp snapped on.

Long black pieces of her hair were spread across the white comforter like someone had emptied a drawer full of grief onto the bed.

More was caught near the edge of Daniel’s slippers, sitting neatly beside the bed as if nothing in the room had changed.

Eleanor stood above her in a floral robe, holding Daniel’s electric clippers.

“If you want to keep living in this house,” Eleanor said, “you will quit that job tomorrow and learn how to serve your husband.”
