The first thing Clara remembered was the taste of concrete dust.

Not the pain.

Not the shouting.

Just dust, dry and bitter on her tongue, while a hospital monitor beeped somewhere above her like a cheap alarm clock in a room that belonged to somebody else.

The air smelled like bleach, iodine, warm plastic, and something coppery she could not place until later.

Blood has a way of announcing itself before the mind can keep up.

When Clara opened her eyes, the ceiling was white.

Too white.

Too clean.

Too ordinary for a woman who had been pulled from under a collapsed steel frame at Riverfront Plaza.

Her ribs felt like broken glass wrapped in tape.

Her left lung burned every time the oxygen tube hissed.

Pain ran down her spine so deep and steady that she could not tell where her body ended and the bed began.

A nurse in navy scrubs leaned over her.

Her badge said ELENA ROSS, RN.

She had tired eyes, but not careless ones.

Hospital people can look numb when they have seen too much, but Elena looked like someone who had learned how to stay gentle without pretending the world was gentle back.

“You’re back with us, Clara,” she said.

Clara tried to speak.

Nothing came out but a cracked sound that hurt her throat.

Elena held a sponge of water to her lips.

“Slow,” she said. “You were intubated. Don’t fight your body.”
