She Was Sent Away As A Burden, But The Ranch Saw The Truth-Quieen

Her brothers sent her with a notorious rancher… and the whole ranch ended up defending her.

“Not even the most notorious rancher in the desert would take a woman like her.”

The driver stopped loading bags under the coach.

A woman near the ticket window pretended to study the bus schedule.

Two men outside the diner laughed because it was easier than having a conscience.

Emily stood with her canvas suitcase in one hand and her mother’s old copper canteen in the other.

She was twenty-five, though most mornings she felt older.

Her life fit into that suitcase.

Two dresses.

A broken hair comb wrapped inside a washcloth.

A pair of stockings mended so many times the thread no longer matched.

The canteen her mother had pressed into her hand before she died.

That was all Emily owned that had not been claimed, borrowed, sold, or mocked by her brothers.

Daniel leaned against the pay phone outside the station, smiling as if this were a county fair show and not the last humiliation of his sister’s life.

“If he sends her back by Sunday, she can still clean out the shed,” Daniel said.

A few people looked down.

No one spoke.

Silence can be a kind of vote.

That morning, the whole little town voted to let David and Daniel be cruel.

David held up the ticket.

“You’re going west,” he said.

Emily looked at the paper in his hand.

“An old ranch agent found somebody looking for a wife,” David continued. “Michael owns a hard place past the county line. People say a fire ruined half his face. Maybe a man like that will take what he can get.”
