The chandeliers at the Grand Meridian had always been beautiful, but that night they looked almost too perfect.

They poured crystal light over the white tablecloth, the polished forks, the champagne glasses, and my sister Victoria’s carefully arranged smile.

“I’m comfortable.”

Victoria gave me a smile that did not touch her eyes.

“I only ask because Mom mentioned you’re still renting in Riverside. And this place isn’t exactly casual.”

My brother Marcus lowered his eyes to the menu.

His wife Jennifer pressed her lips together.
