I arrived at Easter brunch in jeans, a black hoodie, and the kind of tired eyes that only come from a red-eye flight and not enough sleep.

By the time I reached my parents’ house, the morning light was already bright against the front windows, and the little American flag on the porch kept tapping softly against its pole in the spring wind.

Mom’s dining room looked exactly the way it always did on holidays.

Honey-glazed ham in the center of the table.

Rosemary potatoes in a white ceramic dish.

Fresh tulips on the sideboard.

Pressed napkins.

Polished silverware.

Everybody dressed like someone might take a picture for a neighborhood newsletter.

My sister Lauren looked perfect, of course.

Cream dress.

Fresh blowout.

Diamond ring flashing every time she lifted her hand.

She had always known how to enter a room already admired.

I had always known how to enter one already judged.

“Oh, good,” Lauren said when I stepped inside. “Maya finally showed up.”

I set the bottle of wine on the counter.

“Happy Easter, everyone.”

Mom smiled at Lauren before she even looked fully at me.

“We were just talking about your sister’s promotion,” she said. “Senior marketing director. Isn’t that wonderful?”

“It is,” I said.
