The first thing I remember about that dinner was the sound of the porch flag tapping against Beatrice’s railing.

Beatrice had been talking about the trip for almost twenty minutes before she finally said the quiet part out loud.

“You’re not coming on the cruise, Chloe.”

I thought I had misheard her, not because Beatrice was kind, but because even she usually wrapped her insults in enough tissue paper to pretend they were gifts.

That night, she did not bother.

“Sorry,” I said, placing my napkin next to my plate. “What did you just say?”

She lifted her wineglass as if we were all at some formal toast.

“On a luxury trip,” she said, “there’s no place for people who don’t know how to behave.”

Across from me, Amber’s mouth twitched.

Robert lowered his eyes to his phone.

Ryan, my husband, stared at his plate.

That was the moment that hurt more than the sentence itself.

Beatrice could be cruel, Amber could be shallow, and Robert could survive every family dinner by pretending his phone was more important than the room.
