She Turned Her Sister’s Beach Retreat Into a Business and Got Billed-mdue

The house still smelled like salt when Claire opened the front door.

For one brief second, that smell almost fooled her.

It was the same clean ocean air that usually met her when she arrived after the long drive, the kind that slipped under the door and made the whole place feel like a second chance.

Then the other smells hit.

Red wine.

Cigarette smoke.

Cheap coconut spray tan.

Champagne drying sour into the hardwood.

Claire stood in the entryway with her suitcase still in her hand, the metal handle cold against her palm, and listened to music thumping from the balcony hard enough to rattle the frames on the wall.

Glitter was stuck to the floorboards.

Not sprinkled.

Ground in.

It looked like something had exploded.

Her mother stepped in behind her with the weary little sigh she used whenever a mess had already been assigned to Claire.

“Maybe it’s not as bad as it looks,” Mom said.

Claire did not answer.

The white linen sofas were streaked with red wine and orange spray tan.

The teak dining table had cigarette burns pressed into it like tiny signatures.

Someone had punched a hole through the guest bathroom door.

The hot tub outside churned cloudy water full of sand, glitter, and something that caught the sunlight in sharp silver flashes.

Broken champagne glass.

Then Claire saw the mirror.

Her grandmother’s seashell mirror was lying on the floor, cracked clean through the middle.

Claire’s grandmother had made that mirror the year before she died, sitting at her kitchen table with reading glasses sliding down her nose, gluing shells she had collected from beaches she could no longer walk.
