She Took Her Twin’s Place And Exposed Their Stepmother’s Secret-mdue

My twin sister came to my apartment a little after 9:18 p.m., soaked from the rain and shaking so hard the hallway light made her shadow jump against the wall.

Laura had one sleeve pulled over her hand.

Her bottom lip was split.

A purple bruise sat high on her cheekbone, swollen enough that my breath stopped before I could say her name.

The rim clicked against her teeth because she could not stop shaking.

But what chilled me most was not the bruise.

It was the way she kept glancing over my shoulder toward the door, as if the hallway itself might reach in and take her back.

“What happened?” I asked.

Laura sat on the edge of my couch with her shoulders folded inward.

She looked like she was trying to become small enough to be overlooked.
