The soup hit Lena Harlan before the bowl shattered.

For one second, she saw the steam leaving the rim in a white curl under the kitchen light.

For the next, heat spread across her cheek, her jaw, and the side of her neck so suddenly that her hand flew up before she had time to think.

Then the bowl hit the tile.

Ceramic cracked under the table with a hard, bright sound.

The smell of chicken broth, garlic, and pepper filled the room, thick and ordinary, which somehow made the moment feel worse.

Ordinary kitchens were supposed to hold arguments about bills, groceries, who forgot to take out the trash.

They were not supposed to hold a mother standing beside the stove with her hand still lifted, acting as if burning her own daughter was a reasonable answer.

Marissa sat across the table with Lena’s designer bag pressed to her chest.

She was not shocked.

That was the part Lena remembered later.

Marissa did not jump up.

She did not ask whether Lena was okay.

She only smiled, small and pleased, like the soup had proven a point.

‘Give her all your things—or get out!’ Lena’s mother screamed.

Lena grabbed the nearest dish towel and pressed it to her cheek.

The fabric was rough against her skin.

The heat made her eyes water, but she refused to call the tears by their name.

She had spent too many years crying quietly in that house while her mother stood in another room pretending not to hear.

‘You threw boiling soup at me,’ Lena said.

Her voice came out thin.

Her mother’s expression barely changed.

‘Don’t be dramatic,’ she said. ‘It was warm.’

Steam still rose from the broken bowl.
