The spoon stopped before anyone did.

It made one sharp scrape against the bottom of Norma Mercer’s soup pot, the kind of sound that should have been ordinary in a kitchen and somehow was not.

Daniel stood in the kitchen doorway in his blue work shirt with one hand near his mug, pretending he had only wandered in for coffee.

Elena knew better.
