The first thing I noticed was not the pain.

It was the smell.

Burned coffee.

The faint plastic smell of the oxygen tube resting near my cheek.

For a few seconds, I did not know where I was.

The ceiling above me was too white, the lights were too sharp, and the air had that cold hospital stillness that makes every tiny sound feel important.

Then I heard my mother crying.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just small broken sounds tucked behind a paper cup of coffee she had probably been holding for hours.

I tried to move toward her voice, and pain tore through me so fast I almost blacked out again.

It started in my shoulder.

Deep, hot, and wrong.

It dragged down my arm like somebody had pulled a live wire through my bones.

My ribs burned when I breathed.

My cheek throbbed so hard it felt inflated from the inside.

Even my teeth hurt.

“Sweetheart,” my mother whispered when my eyes opened. “Oh God. Oh God, you’re awake.”

My father stood behind her with both hands gripping the back of the visitor chair.

He was a big man, or at least he had always seemed like one to me when I was little.

In that hospital room, he looked smaller than I had ever seen him.

Not weak.

Hollow.
