She Refused To Babysit Baby Five. Then The Police Called-nhu9999

When Ryan announced the fifth baby, my parents did not hear a warning.

They heard applause.

They heard legacy.

They heard another reason to call the family blessed and pretend the four children already running wild through the house were proof of something good.

I heard the crash from the living room.

That was the difference between us.

Sunday dinner at my parents’ house always smelled like pot roast, lemon cleaner, and the vanilla candle my mother kept burning on the sideboard even in summer.

The dining room windows were open a few inches, letting in the thick June air from the front yard.

Every time the curtain moved, I could see the little flag by the porch steps tapping softly against its wooden pole.

Madison sat beside him with one hand on her stomach, already smiling before he spoke.

Dad looked up from carving the roast.

Mom straightened like she sensed news coming.

Ryan cleared his throat and said, “We wanted to tell everyone tonight. Madison’s pregnant.”

Dad stood up, grinning, and clapped Ryan on the back.

“Great job, son,” he said.

Not how are you feeling.

Great job, son.

Madison laughed softly, the pleased little laugh she used when everyone was looking at her.

Mom dabbed at her eyes with a napkin.

“Another blessing,” she said.

A blessing was screaming down the hallway at that exact moment because another blessing had stolen a broken dinosaur from his brother.

A third blessing ran through the dining room with one sock on.

A fourth blessing was in the living room doing something that sounded expensive.

Then the crash came.

A sharp, ugly sound.

Glass or ceramic.

Every adult at the table heard it.
