I refused to cosign my sister’s mortgage, and my brother-in-law beat me so badly I woke up in a hospital with my shoulder dislocated, my face swollen shut, and a police officer waiting at my bedside.

The first thing I understood was the smell.

The ceiling above me was white enough to hurt.

The fluorescent lights made the room feel too sharp around the edges.

My tongue tasted like copper, and for a few seconds I could not understand why my own body felt so far away from me.

Then the pain came back.

It started in my shoulder, deep and hot, and dragged itself down my arm like fire catching a wire.

My ribs burned each time I breathed.

My cheek throbbed so hard I could only open one eye.

My father stood behind my mother with both hands on the back of a plastic visitor chair, and he looked older than he had the day before.

He looked like some part of him had been carved out overnight.

Beside my bed sat a police officer with a notebook balanced on her knee.

Her badge said Ramirez.

Her voice was careful when she saw my eye open.

“You’re safe now,” she said.

Safe.
