My husband slammed my head against the bathroom mirror because I asked about his missing paycheck.

The glass broke before I understood I was bleeding.

There was a sound first, a hard crack that seemed to jump out of the bathroom walls and land somewhere behind my ribs.

Then the metallic taste in my mouth.

Then Dean’s hand still tangled in my hair as if he had the right to hold me in place and decide how much of me hit what.

“All I asked,” I whispered, pressing my palm to my temple, “was where your paycheck went.”

His breathing filled the room.

The bathroom smelled like bourbon, shaving cream, and the copper sting of blood.

The washer thumped down the hallway with a load of towels I had started before dinner, like the house was trying to continue being normal around us.

Dean stood over me in his faded black T-shirt and work jeans, his wedding ring catching the vanity light.

For years, I had looked at that ring and tried to convince myself it meant something permanent.

That night, it looked more like a warning.

“You embarrass me in my own house,” he said.

I remember thinking that was the part that would stay with me.

Not the glass.

Not the blood.

The word his.

His house.

His paycheck.

His temper.

His right to decide when I had asked too much.

Then Linda walked in.

My mother-in-law stopped at the bathroom doorway and looked at the floor, the mirror, my face, and Dean’s beer-breath anger in one slow sweep.
