The first thing David heard was the chain.

It scraped across the refrigerator handles while the morning coffee sat bitter in the pot and the kitchen window filled with pale sunlight.

Ashley stood in front of him with a new padlock in her hand.

His son Michael stood behind her with his eyes on the floor.

“Starting today,” Ashley said, “if you want to eat, you earn it.”

David was sixty-eight years old.

He had been called stubborn, quiet, old-fashioned, cheap, and too soft on his only son.

Nobody had ever called him lazy inside his own kitchen.

That was new.

The house was not impressive from the street.

It had a porch step that dipped on the left side, a dented mailbox by the curb, a narrow driveway, and rosebushes along the back fence that his wife Sarah had planted with her own hands.

To David, it was not just a house.

It was thirty-two years of double shifts, late mortgage payments, patched roofs, discount groceries, and Sarah sitting at the table with a calculator while telling him they would be fine even when both of them knew fine was a prayer more than a plan.

They had bought it when Michael was small enough to fall asleep in the back seat before they reached home.

They had paid it off slowly.

One check at a time.

One sacrifice at a time.

When Sarah died, the place changed its sound.

The hallway stopped carrying her slippers.

The kitchen stopped smelling like cinnamon toast on cold mornings.

The back door stopped opening every hour because she was checking on roses she talked to like children.

At the funeral home, Michael hugged him so hard David could feel the boy he used to be somewhere under the grown man’s jacket.

“Dad,” Michael had said, “I’m not leaving you alone.”

David believed him because fathers are foolish in one particular way.
