The house still smelled like salt when Claire opened the front door.

For one second, that almost fooled her.

The salt air had always been the first thing she noticed when she came back to the retreat, clean and sharp, sliding through the cracks around the old porch door and softening every hard thing she had carried from the week before.

Then the second smell hit.

Red wine.

Cigarette smoke.

Cheap coconut spray tan.

The sour sweetness of champagne drying into wood.

Music thumped from the balcony so hard the framed prints along the hallway trembled against the wall.

Claire stood with her suitcase still in her hand, the metal handle cold against her palm, and stared at glitter stuck across the entryway floor like something had exploded there.

Her mother stepped in behind her and shut the door with a soft click.

“Well,” Mom said, already tired, already defensive, “it looks like they had fun.”

Claire did not answer.

The white linen sofa was streaked with red wine and orange spray tan.

A throw pillow had been split at the seam.

The teak dining table, the one Claire had bought secondhand and sanded herself over two long weekends, had cigarette burns pressed into it like someone had signed their name with fire.

The guest bathroom door had a hole through the lower panel.

Outside, the hot tub water was cloudy with sand, glitter, and bright slivers of broken champagne glass catching the afternoon sun.

Then Claire saw the mirror.

Her grandmother’s seashell mirror was on the floor beneath the hallway wall.

It was cracked straight through the middle.

Claire set her suitcase down without meaning to.

The sound of the wheels touching the wood floor felt too loud.

Her grandmother had made that mirror the year before she died, sitting at her kitchen table with reading glasses slipping down her nose and a damp dish towel folded under her elbows.
