A backyard where Jason said he could already picture Mom sitting in a lawn chair while burgers cooked on the grill.

Their mother smiled every time he said it because she wanted to believe a new house could turn the family into a cleaner version of itself.

Tara stood beside him, one hand wrapped around his arm.

She wore that careful public smile Claire had learned to distrust.

It was soft at the corners and cold in the eyes.

Tara had been like that since the engagement.

Sweet in front of family.

Sharp in private.
