The contraction hit so hard Chloe Bennett forgot the ceiling had tiles.

All she could see was white light, broken into streaks above her, and all she could smell was antiseptic, latex gloves, and her own fear rising hot under the hospital blanket.

The IV pump clicked.

Somewhere beyond the curtain, a cart rolled down the hallway with one bad wheel squeaking at the same point every turn.

Then the pain swallowed all of it.

“Breathe, Chloe,” the nurse said.

Chloe tried.

She had been trying for nineteen hours.

Her hands were locked around the plastic bed rails, slick with sweat, and her hair had come loose from the elastic she had used before leaving her apartment the night before.

She remembered putting that elastic around her wrist while standing in her small bathroom, staring at her huge belly in the mirror, telling herself she could do this alone because she had already done everything else alone.

Swollen ankles.

The crib she built badly the first time and rebuilt again after watching a video at two in the morning.

The grocery bags she carried up two flights of stairs because she refused to ask a neighbor for help.

The blank emergency contact line on every form.

She had survived all of it.

Now her body was asking for one last impossible thing.

“You’re doing great,” Linda Kowalski said, her voice steady in the way only an experienced labor nurse could make steady.

Linda’s badge swung against her scrub top when she leaned over the bed.

Chloe had stared at that badge so many times through the night that she knew every letter.
