Margaret stood then.
Her diamonds caught the light.
“That is enough,” she said.
I turned to her.

The coordinator made a small sound.
The revised seating chart trembled in her hand.

“You are humiliating yourself,” she said.
I almost laughed.

“Ellie.”
He had not called me that in public since I was a child.
Everyone turned toward him.

Then I turned away from him and walked down from the stage.

My mother stood when I reached her.
