I heard Margaret before I saw her.

Her voice came through the half-open kitchen window with the scrape of gravel under her heels and the small metal clink of the chicken feed scoop by the porch.

I was standing in my grandmother’s old kitchen, one hand wrapped around a warm mug, lavender detergent still faint in the curtains like Ana had only stepped into the laundry room for more clothespins.

“Oh, don’t worry,” Margaret said into her phone. “She won’t notice if a few eggs go missing. She’s too busy pretending this place matters.”

Then she laughed.

It was not a loud laugh.

It was worse than that.

It was clipped and neat, the kind of laugh she used at family dinners when she wanted everybody to understand she had just been cruel, but tastefully.

“That farm shack,” she continued, “is the perfect place for dumping trash.”

There was a pause.

Then she added, softer, like it was a private joke, “Meaning her, apparently.”

I stood in the middle of Ana’s kitchen and did not move.

The refrigerator hummed.

My mug shook against the saucer.

Outside, one of the hens gave a nervous little cluck, and all I could think was that Margaret was standing on land my grandmother had kept alive with two bad knees, cheap coffee, and hands that never seemed to stop working.

That “old woman” Margaret liked to dismiss had a name.

Ana.

She taught me how to knead bread until the dough stopped fighting back.

She taught me how to patch a torn screen, label jars, prune rose bushes, and listen for the first soft cluck that meant an egg was coming.

When she died, she left me the house, the pantry, the chickens, and a cedar jewelry box she kept on the top shelf behind the flour tin.

That box had no diamonds in it.

It had something more dangerous to the heart.
