She Found Her Empty House, Then Let the Evidence Speak for Her-mdue

While I was at work, my sister and her husband stripped my house bare.

Furniture, appliances, even the forks were gone.

On the floor where my kitchen table should have been, they left a note that read, “We need it more than you do.”

I did not call.

I did not text.

I did not warn them.

I just waited.

That sounds cold when I say it like that, but cold was not what I felt when I first opened my front door.

I felt hollow.

I had come home from the hospital after a twelve-hour shift, still wearing navy scrubs with a coffee stain near the pocket and compression socks that had left marks around my calves.

My shoulders hurt from lifting patients.

My head hurt from smiling at families who were scared and angry and exhausted.

All I wanted was a shower, leftovers, and ten minutes on my own couch with the television low enough to feel like company but not noise.

Instead, my key turned in the lock, the door opened, and the house gave me back nothing.

No couch.

No television.

No curtains.

No kitchen table.

The first sound I remember was the tiny scrape of my own shoe against the threshold because my body stopped before the rest of me understood why.

The living room smelled like drywall dust and winter air.

The light coming through the uncovered windows was too bright, almost rude, falling across empty patches of floor where furniture had blocked the sun for years.

My grandmother’s coffee table was gone.
