“If I broke your leg, it’s because somebody finally needed to teach you your place.”

That was the sentence Elena Morales remembered more clearly than the crack.

She made copies of insurance cards and put reminders in Adrian’s phone because he forgot everything that did not directly inconvenience him.

Grace still treated her like an intruder.

The first time Grace asked to hold Elena’s purse during dinner, Elena thought it was harmless.

The second time, Grace said Elena got “emotional” when she had her phone.

By the third month, Elena’s cards, ID, and phone were often placed on the sideboard or in Grace’s handbag, always framed as a family preference, never as control.

“You don’t need to be glued to that thing,” Grace would say.
