No one came to my graduation.

Not one person from my family sat in the bleachers.

Not my mother.

The stadium was bright enough that afternoon to make the metal bleachers look white-hot.

The May sun bounced off the field, off the folding chairs, off the glassy diploma folders stacked beside the stage.

The air smelled like sunscreen, cut grass, and burnt coffee from a paper cup someone had wedged under their seat behind me.

Every cheer came in waves.

Somebody’s mother screamed until her voice cracked.

Somebody’s father whistled through his fingers.

A grandmother in a pink cardigan cried before the student she loved even reached the stage.

Then the announcer said my name.

“Camila Elaine Reed, Master of Data Analytics.”

I stood up, lifted my chin, and did what I had promised myself I would not do.

I searched the family section.

Empty.

Not mostly empty.

Not hard to see.

Empty in the exact place where my mother had told me she and Dad would try to sit if they got there early enough.

For one second, my body did the strange, hopeful math children do even when they are grown.

Maybe they were parking.

Maybe they had gone to the wrong gate.

Maybe Dad’s back had locked up and Mom was helping him.
