By the time Sarah Hail came home, she had learned the difference between danger and betrayal.

Danger made noise.

Betrayal waited behind a porch light and smiled like it had every legal right to be there.

She stepped out of the rideshare with one duffel bag, one garment bag, and twenty-five years of military service folded into the creases of her uniform.

The September air felt too warm for the hour.

It smelled of damp leaves, road dust, and old rain drying on pavement.

Across the quiet street, the house stood behind its black iron gate, still framed by the sycamore tree her grandfather had planted before Sarah was born.

The tree had grown crooked with age, but it was still there.

So was the porch.

So was the kitchen window where her grandmother used to set pies to cool.

So was the little strip of lawn where Sarah had learned to throw a softball, then a spiral, then eventually a field radio hard enough to make a private quit laughing during training.

She had been gone a long time.

She knew that.

But being gone was not the same as disappearing.

Her sister Sophia came out before Sarah could reach the gate.

Sophia wore a cream blouse, narrow black pants, and the same expression she had worn as a teenager whenever she broke something and convinced their father Sarah had done it.

Her hair was smooth.

Her lipstick was perfect.

Her phone was already in her hand.

“Veteran!” Sophia shouted into it, loud enough for the neighbor across the street to stop raking. “She’s a homeless trespasser. Send someone NOW.”

Sarah froze with one hand on the gate.

At first, she thought she had misheard.

She had heard gunfire wrong before.

She had heard men call for their mothers in languages she did not know and still understood exactly what they meant.
