The second knock landed harder than the first.

For the first time all night, my father did not shout.

He looked at the thick manila envelope in my hand, then at the front door, then at my mother, as if one of them might explain why the room had stopped belonging to him.

Ruby stood behind me with her hospital bracelet still on.

The plastic tag brushed my sleeve every time she trembled.

I could still taste blood in my mouth, coppery and warm, and the side of my face felt like someone had pressed a hot pan against it.

My mother looked at the envelope like it was alive.

“Evelyn,” she said softly. “Put that away.”

That voice was worse than yelling.

It was her church hallway voice.

It was the voice she used when there might be witnesses, when she needed to sound like a tired mother instead of a woman who had let her grandchild watch violence happen in a kitchen.

I kept the deed visible.

The overhead bulb hummed.

This time Ruby flinched so hard she bumped into my back.

I reached behind me without looking and touched her wrist.

“Stay with me,” I whispered.

“I am,” she said, but her voice was tiny.

My father stepped toward the door.
