The kitchen still smelled like roast chicken when I learned my daughter had gotten married without me.

Butter had melted into the mashed potatoes.

The good tablecloth, the one I only used when someone mattered, was spread across the table like proof that I had expected this lunch to be happy.

Valerie did not even look uncomfortable at first.

She arrived late, wearing sunglasses, fresh nails, and a gold bracelet I had never seen before.

She kissed the air beside my cheek, dropped her purse on the chair, and sat down like she had stopped by between more important things.

I told myself not to be sensitive.

Mothers are always telling themselves that.

We excuse the late arrivals, the short texts, the forgotten calls, because we remember the little hand that used to reach for ours in parking lots.

We remember fever nights and school forms and the tiny backpack they could not zip by themselves.

So when Valerie tasted the chicken and said, “Mom, by the way… I already got married,” I did not understand the words at first.

My fork hit my plate.

It made a small, clean sound.

“What do you mean you already got married?”

She sighed.

“Yeah. A week ago.”

The whole kitchen seemed to shrink around me.

“A week ago?”

“Oh, Mom, don’t make that face. It was something small. Just City Hall. We’ll do something big later.”

I looked at my daughter, my only child, the person I had built my life around after her father walked out and left us with debt taped to every wall.

“And you didn’t think to tell me?”

That was when she put her phone down just long enough to look annoyed.

“Mom, don’t start. We only invited important people.”
