She had worked early mornings at Bellamy Bakery when Michael first saw her, her sleeves dusted with flour and her hair pinned badly because the rush had started before sunrise.

He had stopped in for coffee before a site visit.

She had corrected his order after watching him pretend he liked black espresso.

“You want milk,” she said, sliding him a cup. “You just think suffering makes you look serious.”

He married her two years later.

Olivia Carter had smiled through the wedding like a woman watching a stain spread across antique linen.

Jason Pike, Michael’s cousin and the family attorney, had raised his glass and said Emily brought “freshness” into the family.
