Pregnant Wife Saw Her Husband’s Engagement On TV, Then Lawyers Came-mdue

The gel on Amara’s belly was still cold when her marriage died on national television.

She was twenty-six weeks pregnant, lying on the exam table in Dr. Owen Brennan’s office, trying not to cry from relief.

Not sadness.

Relief.

The ultrasound room smelled like hand sanitizer, latex gloves, and the burnt coffee somebody had left on the counter outside the door.

The paper sheet under her hips made a dry crinkling sound every time she shifted.

On the monitor beside her, her daughter moved in grainy black and white, tiny and stubborn and alive.

Her heartbeat filled the room in quick, determined beats.

Thump-thump-thump-thump.

After three years of trying, after two losses she still could not talk about without feeling her throat close, that sound felt like a miracle with a pulse.

Preston had promised he would come.

He had said it at 7:40 that morning while buttoning his shirt in the penthouse bedroom, already checking his phone.

He had kissed the air beside her cheek and said the company might need him, but he would try.

A man who tried.

Tried to come home before midnight.

Tried to remember appointments.

Tried to answer his wife’s questions without making her feel childish for asking them.

Amara had let herself believe the baby might soften him.

People say babies do not fix marriages, and that is true.

The page was warm from the machine.

Amara touched the blurry curve of her daughter’s cheek and smiled so hard it hurt.

Then the small TV mounted in the corner of the exam room cut from morning programming to breaking news.

The sound was low at first.

Then the anchor said Preston’s name.

Amara turned her head.

“Tech billionaire Preston Hartwell, CEO of Hartwell Innovations, has announced his upcoming marriage to longtime girlfriend Celeste Ashford. The ceremony is expected to take place next month at the Ashford family estate in the Hamptons.”

For one second, her mind rejected the sentence.

There were other Prestons.

There were other Hartwells.

There were surely other men in tuxedos with that exact smile and that exact arrogant tilt of the chin.

Then his face filled the screen.
