I never told my in-laws who my father was because I thought marriage should not need a title standing guard at the door.

David knew none of that.

He knew I did not bring relatives to Thanksgiving.

He knew I did not post family photos.

He knew I never answered questions about my parents in more than one sentence.

So he built a whole version of me in his head, and in that version, I was alone.

By the time Christmas came, I was seven months pregnant and tired in a way sleep no longer fixed.

At 5:00 a.m., Sylvia’s kitchen smelled like roasting turkey, cinnamon, melted butter, and the pine cleaner she sprayed over every surface until the air burned in my nose.

The house was warm enough to fog the lower corners of the kitchen windows.

The oven breathed heat into my face every time I opened it.

My feet were swollen inside my flats, and the elastic band of my maternity dress rubbed under my apron until the skin beneath it felt raw.

Sylvia had planned the dinner like a campaign.

She had a checklist taped inside a cabinet door.

Table set by four.

Guests by six.
