I was eight months pregnant when my husband raised his hand to me again.

He did it in the reception room, under the chandelier he bragged about every time donors came over.

The crystals trembled above us, catching warm light and throwing it across the marble floor like nothing ugly could happen in a room that expensive.

“If you don’t sign tomorrow,” Michael said, “that baby will be born without a mother.”

His voice did not crack.

That was what frightened me most.

It was not a burst of rage he would later pretend to regret.

I stood near the staircase with both arms wrapped around my stomach, feeling my son move under my palms as if he knew the room had changed.

Inside, Michael stepped closer.

“Stay with me, baby,” I whispered, pressing one hand lower on my belly.

Michael smiled at that.

Not because he thought it was sweet.
