Margaret opened her eyes at 1:30 in the morning because of a sound so small most people would have missed it.

A whisper.

The house was dark, the radiator ticking against the cold, the hallway holding the faint smell of old wood and the lavender detergent she used because it was cheap when she bought it in bulk.
