My Sister Tried To Take My House Until My Fireproof Box Opened-nga9999

At 5:06 in the morning, my younger sister walked into the house I bought and tried to evict me from it.

The rain was steady enough to make the kitchen window look blurred.

My coffee had gone lukewarm beside my laptop.

A half-finished line of code blinked on the screen in pale blue light, waiting for the only quiet hour I usually had before the rest of the house woke up.

That hour was supposed to belong to me.

Then the front door opened.

Not carefully.

Not like somebody who knew they were entering another person’s home.

It opened with confidence, the kind of confidence people have when they have already decided the rules do not apply to them.

Christina stepped into my kitchen first.

My younger sister wore a camel coat, black pants, gold hoops, and the kind of makeup that looks effortless only because someone spent time making it look that way.

Behind her came Jonathan.

He shut the door with a soft click.

He wore a navy wool coat and polished shoes, and his face had that expensive calm he always used when he wanted something selfish to sound strategic.

“Michelle,” Christina said, looking around my kitchen. “You’re up.”

“It’s five,” I said. “I’m always up.”

Jonathan checked his watch.

“Five-oh-six.”

That was the first warning.

Not his arrival.

Not the folder under his arm.

That little correction.

People who come to your house before sunrise with a plan always care too much about exact time.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

Christina did not answer right away.

She walked past me and touched the back of one dining chair.

Then the edge of the counter.

Then the refrigerator handle.

Her fingertips moved across my kitchen like she was checking whether the surfaces would suit her.

Like I was already gone.

“Something needs to change,” she said.

Jonathan placed a manila folder on the kitchen island.

It landed with a soft slap.

Not loud.
