My Sister Totaled Mom’s SUV, Then Tried To Put My Name On It-Neyney

The parking space was empty before I understood what empty meant.

At 8:02 that morning, I stood in my mother’s driveway in boxers and an old college T-shirt, staring at the clean rectangle of concrete where the SUV should have been.

The air had that thin early-morning cold that slips under cotton and makes your knees tighten.

Somewhere down the street, a dog tag jingled, and a trash can lid scraped in the wind.

The driveway still smelled like wet leaves and old motor oil.

Only the SUV was gone.

For one second, my brain tried to put it back.

Then my hand went to my pocket for keys that were not there.

I ran inside barefoot, feet slapping against the tile, and tore through the guest room where I had been staying since my actual car went into the shop Tuesday.

My mother had insisted I stay with her.

“Use the SUV,” she had said.

“That’s what family does.”

On the dresser, my wallet sat where it always sat.

My phone was beside it.

The little dish where I always dropped my keys was empty.

I checked the drawer, my jeans, under the bed, and finally the pillow, because fear makes you search stupid places before it lets you face smart conclusions.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Photo attachment.

The image opened, and my stomach dropped.

The SUV was crumpled against a telephone pole on a dark back road, hood folded up, windshield webbed white, both airbags hanging limp in the cabin.

Another message arrived.

Hey Evan, I’m so sorry. We’re all okay. Cassie’s okay. The car is totaled. She said she’d tell you but I don’t know if she did. Please don’t freak out.

Cassie.
