I have always trusted numbers before people.

Numbers do not smile while they lie.

A beam rated for a certain load will bend when that load is exceeded.

A concrete column will crack if the pressure is wrong.

A foundation will shift if the soil underneath has been ignored too long.

As a structural engineer, that kind of truth made sense to me.

What I did not understand, at least not soon enough, was that families have load limits too.

And mine had been cracking for years.

The house on Mill Road was small enough that strangers sometimes dismissed it before they even stepped inside.

Two bedrooms.

One bathroom with an old medicine cabinet that squeaked.

A narrow kitchen where the refrigerator hummed too loudly at night.

A front porch with an oak railing my grandfather had sanded and sealed himself every other summer.

But to me, that house was never small.

It was the place where my grandfather taught me how to read a tape measure.

It was the place where he let me hold nails in a coffee can while he fixed the back steps.

It was the place where he sat beside me after my first college rejection letter and said, without pity, “Then we try another door.”

When he died, he left the house to me.

Not to my parents.

Not to my brother Michael.

To me.

My mother never forgave that detail.

She dressed her resentment in softer clothes, of course.
