My Niece Slapped Me at a Cookout Over My Brother-in-Law’s Lie-mdue

In the middle of a family barbecue, my 7-year-old niece slapped me across the face in front of everyone.

“You deserve it for messing with married men,” she screamed.

My own blood condemned me for a filthy secret my brother-in-law invented.

The sound of the slap was not dramatic.

It was not the kind of sound that makes people scream right away.

It was small and sharp and final, like a wet towel snapping too close to your ear.

For one second after it landed, the whole backyard seemed to hold its breath.

The grill hissed behind my father.

The lemonade pitcher sweated in my mother’s hand.

A red plastic cup rolled in a slow circle near my cousin’s shoe, spilling soda across the patio like nobody had permission to move until it stopped.

Olivia stood in front of me with her little pink sneakers planted in the grass.

She was seven.

She still asked for the crust cut off her sandwiches.

She still wore glitter clips in her hair and believed Band-Aids fixed almost anything.

“My mom says you deserve it for messing with married men,” she said again, louder this time, like she had rehearsed it.

I pressed my hand to my cheek.

“Olivia,” I whispered, “who told you to say that?”

Her chin lifted.

That was when my sister Sarah rushed across the grass and pulled her daughter behind her.

“Do not talk to my child,” Sarah said.

I looked at her, waiting for the joke to break, the mistake to show itself, the normal version of my sister to come back.

It did not.

Sarah’s face was hard in a way I had never seen directed at me.
