She remembered the nurse saying, “Deep breath, Mom,” with the careful tone people use when they know pain is about to catch up.

Mostly, she remembered Noah.

He was smaller than she expected, even though every nurse told her he was perfectly healthy.

He came wrapped in a striped hospital blanket with one cheek pressed flat and one fist tucked under his chin, and the first time Claire held him, the whole room seemed to shrink to the warm weight of him on her chest.

Evan should have been beside her.

He had planned to be.

There had been a duffel bag packed by the bedroom door, a phone charger in his hoodie pocket, and two paper coffee cups from the gas station sitting in the cup holders of their SUV when they drove to the hospital before sunrise.

Payroll records were missing, a vendor was threatening to walk, and a delivery was stranded.

He said it all like the business was a burning building and Evan was the only person who knew where the extinguisher was.

Claire was already checked in, already wearing the hospital bracelet, already trying not to show how scared she was.

Evan looked at her like leaving might break him.

Claire told him to go because she had been trained since childhood to make Martin’s panic smaller for everyone else.

The surgery happened faster than her fear could organize itself.
