My mother’s hand was still gripping the edge of the table. Her chair lay on its side behind her. Ryan stood beside me with his mouth half open, the color draining from his face.

I looked down at the birth certificate in my hand.

Emily Whitaker.

Mother: Laura Bennett.

Father: Thomas Whitaker.

Grandpa.

The man they told me had only taken pity on me.
