Behind her came Arthur, my legal chief, carrying a slim black folder.

Two corporate security officers stopped just inside the doorway.

Just present.

Diane’s hand tightened around her wine glass.

“What is the meaning of this?” she demanded.

Margaret did not look at her first.

She looked at me.

At my soaked hair.

At the water still running down my sleeve.

At my hand resting over my stomach.

Her expression changed only slightly, but I knew her well enough to see it.

Fury, held behind manners.
