Richard Dalton came home just after sunrise with another woman’s perfume still buried in the fabric of his shirt.

The house was too quiet before he even reached the nursery.

No answer.

He called again, louder this time, and the sound moved through the polished rooms without finding anyone.

The baby monitor on the dresser was dark.

That was when Richard started running.

The nursery door was not locked, but it was half-stuck from the force of his own first shove, and he hit it again with his shoulder hard enough to split the paint near the hinge.

“Where is my son?”

The wood cracked.

His hand caught the frame, opening skin across his knuckles, but he did not look down.

He only looked at the crib.

It was empty.

There was no small blue sleeper folded over the rail.

There was no stuffed elephant tucked into the corner of the mattress.

There was no soft little breath, no restless newborn sound, no Sarah standing by the window with Ethan over one shoulder and exhaustion in her eyes.

Only a sheet tucked flat and smooth.

Only a silence so complete it made the room feel staged.

Richard stepped inside slowly, breathing through his mouth.

For one foolish second, he looked toward the changing table as if a three-month-old baby might somehow be placed there waiting for him.
