The first time Emily said she cheated, I heard the words but could not make them belong to my wife.

The second time she said them, I wished the first time had been the only one.

We were sitting at our kitchen table on a cold November evening, with dinner cooling between us and the clock above the refrigerator tapping out each second like it had somewhere better to be.

Neither of us had touched our plates, and the tea in her hands trembled because she did.

“I cheated on you,” she said.

The sentence was small.

The damage was not.

For a moment I looked at the woman I had been married to for twelve years and waited for the rest of the world to correct her.

No one did.

The clock kept ticking.

The refrigerator hummed.

The house held its breath.

“When?” I asked.

She looked down at the table like the answer was written in the grain of the wood.

“About a year ago.”

A year can sound short until it includes holidays, bills, morning coffee, and every “I love you” you believed without flinching.

I felt something inside me go very still.

“Who?”

She closed her eyes.

“His name was Daniel.”

I hated him instantly, even though I knew nothing about him except that he had walked into the place in my life where I thought no one else could stand.

Then Emily said the line that almost made me laugh, because pain sometimes reaches a place where it sounds insane.

“I did it to save our marriage.”

I stared at her.

“You cheated to save our marriage.”

She nodded once, and tears spilled down her face.

“I know how it sounds.”

“No,” I said. “You don’t.”

I did not shout.

That surprised both of us.

I wanted to.

I wanted to knock over the table, break the mug, ask her how many times she had touched my hand with the same hands that had touched him.

Instead I sat there so cold that my own voice barely sounded human.
