The water hit David so hard that the first thing he lost was his breath.

Not his balance.

Not his pride.

It came out of him in one torn sound, and then the cold soaked through his gray sweatshirt, flattened his white hair to his scalp, and ran down the lines in his face like the yard itself was trying to wash him away.

Michael stood over him with the garden hose in both hands.

Ashley stood near the patio door with her phone raised.

The backyard smelled like wet dirt, cut grass, and fertilizer from the open tool shed.

A small American flag hung from the porch rail, snapping once in the cold wind like the only thing in that yard still brave enough to move.

“Keep recording,” David said.

His voice did not come out loud.

That was what made everyone hear it.

Michael’s finger stiffened on the nozzle.

Ashley lowered the phone half an inch, then lifted it again because she had already committed to being cruel and did not know how to stop without looking afraid.

“What did you say?” Michael asked.

David swallowed, tasting hose water and mud.

“I said keep recording.”

Across the fence, Mrs. Carter had opened her back door.

David did not know her well.

She was the kind of neighbor who waved from the mailbox, brought in trash cans during storms, and minded her own business until a person’s business turned into screaming.

That evening, she was not waving.

She was holding her phone, too.

Michael saw her and finally shut the hose off.
