His Daughter Was Left Bleeding In The Driveway. Then His Brother Acted-nga9999

The call came after midnight, while James was standing in a Minneapolis hotel lobby with a suitcase at his feet.

He had been five hundred miles from home for work.

Then Carolyn Sherwood called.

Carolyn lived two doors down from James and Melissa outside Chicago.

She was sixty-four, a retired school librarian with gray hair usually pinned up, and the kind of neighbor who remembered trash day for the whole block.

She brought zucchini bread in August.

She waved from behind her mailbox.

She did not call after midnight unless something had gone terribly wrong.

“James,” she whispered. “I don’t know what to do.”

“What happened?”

“Your daughter is sitting in your driveway.”

Sarah was eight years old.

Eight was still stuffed animals under a blanket.

Eight was still asking him to check the closet when the hallway light flickered.

Eight was still saving the red gummy bears for him because she said they tasted like cough syrup anyway.

“Stay with her,” James said. “Keep the porch light on. Keep talking to her. Do not leave her alone.”

“I won’t,” Carolyn said.

He called Melissa before he even reached the hotel doors.

She did not answer.

He called again from the parking garage.
