Outside, somebody’s lawn mower rattled unevenly down the block.

A small American flag on Rebecca’s porch tapped against its pole whenever the wind moved.

The sound was soft, almost cheerful.

Inside that room, nothing felt cheerful anymore.

At first, I thought Harper was doing what children do.

They turn shadows into animals.

They hear pipes in the walls and call them ghosts.

They make up stories because the world is still loose around the edges for them.

Then I saw her hand.

Her little palm was pressed flat against the hardwood.

Her mouth had gone still.
