The first time I saw the marks on my sister’s back, the world did not get loud.

Emma stood on a little platform in a bridal boutique, wrapped in ivory satin and chandelier light, while a seamstress fussed with the back of her dress.

The place smelled like steamed fabric, hairspray, and the faint vanilla candle burning near the register.

Outside, cars rolled through the wet parking lot, tires whispering over the pavement.

Inside, everything was soft.

Soft carpet.

Soft music.

Soft voices from women carrying garment bags past the front mirrors.

Emma looked beautiful in the dress, but she did not look like a bride.

She looked like a girl trying to survive a room full of pretty things.

The seamstress lowered the zipper, and the metal teeth parted with a small, clean scrape.

Then I saw her back.

For a second, my body refused to move.

The seamstress covered her mouth.

“Oh my God,” she whispered.
