My stepmother thought she had finally won when she called to ban me from the beach house.

The sunset outside my apartment window looked almost cruelly beautiful that evening.

Pink and orange light slid across the glass towers across the street, turning them bright at the edges while my kitchen stayed dim and quiet behind me.

My laptop was open on the counter.

A half-written work email stared back at me.

My coffee had cooled to that bitter, metallic taste coffee gets when you forget it exists because life has cornered you somewhere else.

Then Victoria said, “You are banned from the family beach house forever.”

She said it with pleasure.

Not anger.

Not even tension.

Pleasure.

That was always the worst version of Victoria.

Anger meant she had lost control.

Pleasure meant she had rehearsed.

I stood there in socks, one hand resting on the cold stone counter, and watched my own reflection in the window.

“Say that again,” I said.

She gave a soft laugh.

“I changed all the locks,” she said. “Every door. Every entry. Every place you might think you can sneak through.”

Ice clicked in a glass somewhere on her end of the call.

Victoria loved a glass of white wine when she was being cruel.

It made her voice smoother.

It made her feel like a woman delivering consequences instead of a woman enjoying damage.

“You will not be getting inside,” she continued.
