The first thing I noticed was the smell.

Antiseptic, burnt coffee, and the sharp plastic scent of the oxygen tube brushing my cheek.

For a few seconds, I did not understand where I was.

The lights buzzed in that flat hospital way, the kind of sound that makes every room feel awake even when everyone inside it is exhausted.

Then I heard my mother crying.

Not loudly.

That would have been easier.

She was crying into a paper cup from the vending area, her breath shaking so hard the plastic lid clicked against the rim.

My father stood behind her with both hands locked around the back of a chair.

His jacket still carried sawdust from the garage.

That was the detail that made everything come back.

The folding table.

The papers.

My shoulder.

I tried to move, and pain ran through me so fast the room tilted.

My arm was trapped in a sling.

One side of my face throbbed so badly I could barely open my eye.

My ribs tightened with every breath, and my jaw felt like it had been packed full of broken stone.

“Sweetheart,” my mother whispered when she saw my lashes move.

Her voice cracked before she could finish the sentence.

“Thank God. Thank God you’re awake.”
