Easter dinner at my parents’ house always felt less like family and more like a performance.

We did not talk about the way my mother could watch a person bleed emotionally across her dining room rug and still ask whether anyone wanted more potatoes.

That Easter, rain tapped at the tall windows like fingernails.

Inside, the room smelled like lamb, candle wax, wet wool coats, and lemon polish.

My daughter Clara sat beside me in her pale blue Easter dress, the one my mother had approved over the phone two days earlier.

She was five years old.

Her hands were folded around her napkin like she was trying to prove she deserved the chair she had been given.

I had braided her hair that morning at the kitchen table.
